Combining Parallel Coordinates with the Reorderable Matrix

چکیده

There is evidence that the highlighting of the same data items in different views will improve the proficiency of knowledge acquisition tasks. Making the connection for the user will reduce the cognitive load of switching from one view to another and allows making observations that would not be possible from the two separate views. However, making the connection between conceptually different views might not be so straightforward if the view types are complex and different enough. This paper compares two conceptually different information visualization techniques called parallel coordinate plots and the Reorderable Matrix, and considers how the two representations could be combined. We report an experiment where the participants performed tasks with an application having a Reorderable Matrix and parallel coordinates views to the same data, with linking and without linking. It was found out that although the view linking initially slows the task performance, it will accelerate learning and it is well received by the users.

Interactive Visualization of Multidimensional Data Academic Dissertation in Interactive Technology

Information visualization techniques can aid us in gaining insight into abstract and complex data, and help us when we need to form a mental image thereof. One of the challenging areas in information visualization is the visualization of multidimensional data. The problem arises when we need to consider a large number of data variables and their relationships simultaneously, often without a wel...

Reordering the Reorderable Matrix as an Algorithmic Problem

The Reorderable Matrix is a visualization method for tabular data. This paper deals with the algorithmic problems related to ordering the rows and columns in a Reorderable Matrix. We establish links between ordering the matrix and the well-known and much studied problem of drawing graphs. First, we show that, as in graph drawing, our problem allows different aesthetic criterions which reduce to...

Interaction with the Reorderable Matrix

The Reorderable Matrix is a simple visualization method for quantitative tabular data. This paper examines how first-time users interact with the Reorderable Matrix and how well they perform a simple task of finding correlating attributes. Visualizing a set of data is a common task in various activities such as decision-making or opinion-forming. Typical situations are a person making business-...

The Barycenter Heuristic and the Reorderable Matrix

Bertin’s reorderable matrix (Bertin 1981, 1983, 2001) is a simple visualization method for exploring tabular data. The basic idea is to transform a multidimensional data set into a 2D interactive graphic. The graphical presentation of a data set contains rows and columns which can be permuted, allowing different views of the data set. The actual data values are replaced with symbols, say circle...

Fast Finite Element Method Using Multi-Step Mesh Process

This paper introduces a new method for accelerating current sluggish FEM and improving memory demand in FEM problems with high node resolution or bulky structures. Like most of the numerical methods, FEM results to a matrix equation which normally has huge dimension. Breaking the main matrix equation into several smaller size matrices, the solving procedure can be accelerated. For implementing ...
